Introducing the standards-based runtime for the network edge, now part of Netlify's powerful developer workflow.
As we celebrate Netlify's 7th birthday this month, I'm thrilled to announce the public beta of Edge Functions - bringing an open Deno-based runtime to the network edge, making it easy for developers to build fast, personalized web experiences using existing web frameworks.
To be completely honest, it's been a long road to reach this milestone and it took some deep soul searching before we finally decided to scrap our initial offering. Where we landed with Edge Functions is emblematic of Netlify's approach to solving problems. It doubles-down on our commitment to the open web and the rapid progress that frameworks have made in SSR and streaming. In fact, many edge-first frameworks like Remix, can now run entirely on the network edge, making even the most dynamic sites perform incredibly fast for every user. And yet edge compute solutions on the market today are proprietary and don't easily integrate with frameworks to support this new architectural pattern.
With Netlify Edge Functions, we've partnered with Deno to bring a full standards-based runtime environment to Netlify. Unlike other edge compute solutions, this works out-of-the-box with edge-first frameworks like Remix and with newer middleware and SSR features of frameworks like Next.js and Astro.
The combination of Netlify Functions, Background Functions, Scheduled Functions, and now Edge Functions gives developers the flexibility to apply serverless compute exactly where it makes the most sense - and it's all tightly integrated with Netlify's front end development workflow.
We can't wait to see what you build with Netlify Edge Functions.
